We found this nice Mottled Owl on Panuco Road off the Durango Highway (Western Mexico) in Febuary of 2006. One of the most distinctive markings of the Mottled Owl, to distinguish it in the field, is its dark brown eyes. Its other cousins (Barred, Fulvous and Spotted Owls) also have dark brown eyes but no other medium size owl will. Habitat and range will normally help to separate the three others.
