Both Northern and Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls have similar white markings on their backs. One of the noticeable differences, between the Pygmy-Owls, is the barring on the tail. The Ferruginous Pygmy has light brown or orangey brown tail barring where the Northern Pygmy has white tail barring.
