Black-and-White Owl

It was interesting that this Black-and-white Owl appeared to have"black socks". We found this owl in the Carara area of Costa Rica. Close inspection of the photos show the feathering of the legs (or tarsis) actually show fine white bars. This is something I have never noticed before and have not seen in the species descriptions. As I looked through the photos I have taken in the past it seems this is a common pattern, when you actually get to see the tarsis (legs) of the owl. So often in the field you don't see this part of the bird because it is not exposed.
